BREED OF THE MONTH
- Bernese Mountain Dog -
|
|
|
Gentle Giants
Originally from the town of Berne, Switzerland, high
in the Swiss Alps, Bernese Mountain Dogs were used
primarily to pull carts, guard farms and herd cattle.
A large dog, standing between 23 and 28 inches at
the shoulder and weighing between 85 and 100
pounds, these gentle giants have a sweet, playful
temperament that belies their powerful size. Often
referred to as canine clowns, "Berners" are good
natured, empathetic, and great with kids.
Regular bathing and daily brushing will maintain their
long, silky coats. They are fairly "laid-back" dogs,
loving regular walks and exercise, but also content
with lounging around with the family.
Ownership of this breed is becoming widespread in
the U.S. as people become aware of their wonderful
personalities. Get your Bernese Mountain Dog when
it is young - these "one-owner" dogs may have
trouble adapting to a new owner.

YOUR DOG'S HEALTH
Intestinal Parasites - Dogs Do Get Worms!
Parasites - roundworms, whipworms, hookworms
and tapeworms - can affect any dog that has
contact with the outside world. Transmission
normally occurs through contact with infected soil,
dogs, and wild animals.
Symptoms of intestinal parasites include weight loss,
poor coat condition, vomiting and diarrhea with
lethargy, and occasionally a persistent cough.
Tapeworms can generally be seen with the naked
eye. Evidence includes white rice sized segments
moving on feces or around the dog's anal area.
Monthly heartworm preventative can help prevent
and control parasite problems. With the exception of
tapeworms, most of the products available from your
veterinarian protect against intestinal parasites as
well as heartworms.
Puppies are most at risk from intestinal parasite
infestation and can rapidly end up in a
life-threatening situation if parasites are not
treated. If you believe that your dog may have
parasites, contact your veterinarian to get a
diagnosis and start treatment immediately.
